There are a number of ways that people can interact over the Internet.  Web Meeting and Web Conferencing software supports some or all of these real-time channels for interaction:

  1. application sharing
  2. co-browsing
  3. text chat (IRC)
  4. remote control
  5. video steaming
  6. voice (e.g. VoIP)

Application sharing allows two or more parties to share an application system such as a drafting or graphics package.

Co-browsing allows one party to take control of the web browsers of other participants and to navigate the web (or a website) as a group.

Internet relay chat or simply "chat" allows two or more parties to interact using real-time text messages.

Remote control allows one person to grant another party control of his/her computer.

Video streaming allows images to be sent from one computer to another in order to transfer real-time video.

Voice streaming uses technologies such as VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) to verbally communicate, in real-time.

In summary, data conferencing allows individuals or virtual teams to share presentations, documentation, or applications with anyone who has access to the Internet in a real-time environment.
